The Mass Effect franchise is arguably one of the best things that has happened to the current gaming generation. The first Mass Effect introduced us to a world full of compelling characters, rich storytelling, and solid RPG elements and it soon became a game that millions sunk hours into. When announced, Mass Effect 2 had a lot to live up to, but gamers soon found out that it was everything the first game was plus more due to the fact that it retained every positive aspect from the first, while fixing nearly everything that needed improvement, like the combat system for example. Mass Effect 3 is the final chapter in the Mass Effect trilogy, and it does a great job at ending such a fantastic journey as Commander Shepard.

Mass Effect 3 is a finale. All of the decisions players have made throughout the series result in an all out war against the Reapers who are now attacking the galaxy by the thousands. At the start of the game, Commander Shepard gets reinstated into the Alliance Military, gains his Spectre status back, and is on a mission to gain the support and war assets from the various races he has encountered throughout his adventure. Based on how well your diplomatic actions go, the amount of war assets you have gained entering the final showdown against the Reapers determine how the battle plays out. The most noticeable aspect of the game was that crucial plot decisions occurred every couple of hours. Every ally you've befriended throughout the series is entangled with political affiliations and personal goals, and it is up to you to decide how you go about dealing with them. For example, veterans of the series know that the conflict between the Quarians and Geth have been going on for some time. There is a point in the game where Shepard is caught between the two races and is forced to pick one over the other. Without spoiling anything, just know that I literally paused my game and debated what to do for ten minuets...and that was just
one out of the many difficult scenarios I had to deal with.

When it comes to gameplay, one thing that people will see right from the beginning is that Mass Effect 3 is all about action. The first Mass Effect did not have the best combat system, but the deep character progression system made up for it. The second installment emphasized a more streamlined combat experience while shaving off noticeable portions of the talent point system, and Mass Effect 3 follows that method while adding new mechanics such as the omni-blade and quick time events. In addition, guns now have attachment slots on them and you have the ability to add mods that improve gun damage, accuracy, armor penetration, and much more. The whole concept is very fitting to the franchise, and even though this weapon modification mechanic is new to the series, it feels as if it has always been around due to how easy it is to get used to.

When rumors started to surface saying that multiplayer would be added for the first time in Mass Effect 3, fans were worried that the campaign would be affected in a negative way seeing the fact that resources would now have to be split in order to work on a separate game mode. Seeing that Mass Effect 3 was the finale, fans kept on trying to get Bioware to quit focusing on the multiplayer aspect in order to deliver an ending worthy of recognition. What is the end result? A great co-op experience. The multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 works, and it provides a unique experience that gives fans something to invest in after completing the campaign. The co-op mode allows you to squad up with up to three other players and, together, you fight off waves of Cerberus, Geth, or Reapers depending on what faction you decide to take on. After completing matches, you are awarded an in-game currency that you can spend on upgrade packs that contain characters, guns, supplies, and equipment that are either common, uncommon, rare, or ultra rare. The way in which you receive your upgrades resemble trading card game booster packs which means that you never know what you're going to get. Characters you have start out without customization options, but once you get that character again, another tier of customization unlocks. When it comes to weaponry, each gun has ten levels to them. Each level you gain decreases the weight capacity, increases damage, reduces recoil, and more.

Mass Effect 3 is the final chapter in the Commander Shepard saga, and it showcases the decisions players have made throughout the years of building their stories in a way that has never been seen before. The biggest setback in Mass Effect 3 is only experienced by those who have not played the first two games. Those who are playing Mass Effect for the first time with Mass Effect 3 will not be getting the complete package like someone who will finish the story with a character they made five years ago. However, despite that that setback, at least they will get to experience the finale to one of the greatest series gaming has ever seen.
